Vicente Rafael– The Cell Phone and the Crowd

One of the things that we’re struggling with in the class is making salient connections with a place that few of us know anything about. The attached pdf, by anthropologist Vicente Rafael, looks to the importance in the Philippines of a device that we know quite well–the cell phone. RafaelĀ gets to some interesting questions that we’ve been considering in class (how do people imagine themselves as a class, as a crowd, or as a political movement) and offers us something that we could, perhaps, think of when we design interventions.
